Previously, we’ve shared a blog on how to protect your home and your liability as a pool owner. While that article focused on coverage and risk mitigation, this month we want to shift the focus to something even more important—the safety of your family, friends, and guests.
As temperatures rise and backyard pools fill with activity, it’s important to remember that swimming, while fun, also comes with serious risks. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 4. Even strong swimmers are not immune—tragic accidents can happen quickly and quietly.
To help protect the people you care about most, we’ve compiled a few essential safety reminders for homeowners with pools:
-
Designate a “Water Watcher.”
Always have one responsible adult assigned to actively supervise swimmers. This person should avoid distractions like cell phones and never leave the area while children are in or near the water. -
Teach children to swim.
Formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88% for young children. Early education is one of the most effective safety measures available. -
Have safety gear nearby.
Keep a life ring, reaching pole, and a phone close to the pool in case of emergency. Being prepared can save valuable seconds when they matter most. -
Install proper barriers.
A four-sided fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate significantly reduces drowning risk for young children. Pool covers and alarms can also add extra layers of protection. -
Reinforce pool rules.
Establish clear rules for all swimmers—no running, no diving in shallow water, and never swim alone. Review these with guests, especially children, before they get in the water.
For additional guidance, the CDC offers a helpful summary of what you can do to stay healthy and safe in swimming pools.
At OneDigital, we’re here to help you protect not just your property, but your peace of mind. If you have questions about pool safety, liability coverage, or anything in between, we’re just a call or message away.
